Housing starts rose in the June quarter
October’s ABS building activity figures showed stronger house commencements, while other private residential starts were broadly flat.

This article explains a release dated 7 October 2026. Figures and conditions relate to that release and may have changed since.
Construction began on 52,201 dwellings in the June quarter of 2026, a seasonally adjusted increase of 7.0% from the March quarter. The ABS Building Activity release of 7 October showed a stronger result for new private houses than for other private residential buildings.
New private house commencements rose 11.6% to 31,707, while private other residential commencements edged down 0.1% to 19,126. Total dwelling commencements were 14.4% higher than a year earlier. The trend measure told a more restrained quarterly story, falling 0.2% to 51,421.
The difference between the seasonally adjusted and trend results is a useful reminder that one quarter does not settle the longer-term direction. The figures also describe work starting, rather than homes becoming available to move into. A commencement and a completed dwelling represent different points in the construction process.
For households considering a new home, a national rise in starts does not establish the delivery date of a particular project. The usefulness of the headline is contextual: it describes activity across the market, while a buyer’s decision concerns a specific property, agreement and timetable.
ASIC Moneysmart’s home-buying guidance encourages buyers to consider a property’s condition, likely maintenance costs and suitability for future needs. Those questions sit alongside the financing decision, and remain relevant whether a home is newly built or already established.
Our reading is that the stronger quarterly commencement result should be followed through subsequent stages rather than treated as an immediate increase in finished housing. For readers comparing market reports, checking whether each report measures approvals, starts or completions is a simple way to avoid mixing unlike figures.
The timing also deserves attention. These statistics were released in October but describe the June quarter. They do not measure building work that started in October. This article preserves both the news date and the reference period so the archived result can be read in its proper context.
